Beth Fleming became inspired to work in long-term care (LTC) after volunteering at a local nursing home before attending college. Now the vice president of post-acute care at Great River Health System – Klein Center, Beth enjoys hearing stories from the residents and being able to help others. Beth is a recent 2023 IHCA Member Employee Scholarship recipient.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I volunteered at a local nursing home in Keokuk and then was presented an opportunity to get back in LTC after graduating from college.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy the stories I hear from the residents, their experiences and being able to help them and make them feel comfortable and safe.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Explore your options and take some time understanding all the possibilities in long-term care!
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
Don’t sweat the small stuff – if you can manage surveys, staffing crises and a pandemic, you can do anything!
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy anything that has to do with water – beach, river, pools, lakes and traveling with my husband and children.
What is your favorite quote and why?
Whether you think you can or can’t, you are absolutely right.
