Member Spotlight: Katie Gescheidler of Green Hills Community

August 10, 2023

Katie Gescheidler became inspired to work in long-term care after completing a certified nurse assistant (CNA) licensure program while in high school. After earning her CNA licensure, Katie began working as a CNA at Green Hills Community and is excited to continue her nursing education. Katie is a 2023 John W. and Kimberly D. Grubb Registered Nurse IHCA Foundation scholarship recipient and will attend nursing school to work toward her dream of becoming a registered nurse.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?

In high school, I took a class with a couple of friends, and my clinicals were at Green Hills. I really enjoyed it, so when I completed the class, I applied for a job there.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?

What I like the most are the connections I can make with the residents and the joy and happiness they share with us.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?

Do it. The outcome you get from it is heartwarming, connections with both residents and coworkers are made and you get hands-on experience in health care.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?

Life is not always a perfect world, but helping and caring for those that need you most makes a bigger impact than you think.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy baking, watching sports, being at the lake and spending time with friends and family.

What is your favorite quote and why?

My favorite quote is from Robert Schuller, “Tough times never last but tough people do.” This proves that times are not always easy, but you are capable of making it.
