Peggy Domino, a restorative certified nursing assistant (CNA) and transportation lead at Black Hawk Life Care, has worked in long-term care for over 25 years and finds her career to be inspiring and rewarding.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
Helping others in our small-town community came naturally to me. After eight years of providing private home health services, I received my CNA license. Black Hawk has been my employer for over 18 years now, and I love my job!
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
The social aspect. Visiting and talking to our elderly population is so rewarding, and they are so grateful for your help. Our residents are so knowledgeable and have so much history to share. Long-term care is a wonderful learning experience and an opportunity to help others.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
I would stress how rewarding this career is. The knowledge and history you learn from each individual person you care for is so inspiring. Each person has something new to share and learn from.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
One of the biggest lessons I have learned is how far being compassionate and treating people the way you want to be treated is appreciated. A smile and hug are something everyone can use!
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
Spending time with my grandchildren, helping people in our community with private home care and volunteering at community events.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” I treat people the way I want to be treated.
