Throughout her childhood, Rachel became inspired to work in long-term care by her two grandmothers. Rachel later attended the University of Northern Iowa to study long-term care administration and now serves as the administrator of Accura HealthCare of Cascade.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
Growing up, I was really close with my two grandmothers – they were the only grandparents I had. We shared so many great memories! They were the ones who inspired me to become an administrator.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
My favorite part about working in long-term care are the residents! I love all of our residents; they have so many stories and life lessons to share. Our staff are pretty amazing as well!
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
One thing I tell others is how rewarding this career is! You are able to share their final years together by showing them love, compassion, humor and grace. You truly become their family.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help outside of work?
Never take a day for granted and always say I love you!
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, taking my two dogs for walks, coaching volleyball, playing volleyball and shopping!
What is your favorite quote and why?
“Grow through what you go through.” I believe everything happens for a reason. You may not know how or why, but you can choose to learn and grow though it to become a better version of yourself.
