Member Spotlight: Lacey May of Holland Farms

March 23, 2023

Lacey May began working in long-term care throughout high school and college as a dietary aide. After college, Lacey continued to serve others in long-term care as a community nurse. Lacey describes long-term care as a very rewarding career and enjoys building relationships with residents and their families.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?

I worked as a dietary aide at a retirement community throughout high school and college.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?

The best part of working in long-term care is building relationships with the residents and their families and listening to all the stories about their life and experiences.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?

Working in long-term care is very rewarding. The seniors have so much knowledge and love to share their stories. They get so excited to have even just a little bit of your time and are so appreciative.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help outside of work?

Working in long-term care has really given me a different perspective on life and gives a great reminder daily that even the smallest things can make a difference in someone’s life.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy spending time with my husband and four children. I love traveling, especially going on cruises. I am a big Chicago Cubs fan and enjoy live music.

What is your favorite quote and why?

My favorite quote is, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Working and talking with seniors has really made me think about how fast life really does go and how important it is to slow down, make memories and really enjoy it.
