Member Spotlight: Sandy Baade of Summit House Retirement Village

June 11, 2024

Sandy began her career in health care seventeen years ago, starting in housekeeping at Summit House Retirement Village and transitioned to Recreation Program Director, a role she has held for the past twelve years. Her favorite aspect of working in long-term care is building bonds and trust with the tenants.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?

I started working in health care seventeen years ago. My first position at Summit House was housekeeping, which I did for five years. I was then asked if I would like the position as Recreation Program Director. I’ve been in my current position for the last twelve years.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?

I would have to say the best part about working in health care is the day-to-day interactions with the tenants. The bond and trust you create with them is a wonderful thing. Being around my own Mom, I learned a lot about the elderly and how they do things to the best of their ability to get things done, and to just listen to what they have to say.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?

I would say that if you are looking for satisfying work, a family atmosphere, helping the elderly solve problems, listening to their life stories and just being there for them on a daily basis, health care is the place to be.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have learned to be a better listener, problem solver and that you need to have patience and understanding. Someday, I will be in their shoes.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?

When I am away from work, I like to take short trips, shopping, reading, going for walks, spending time with family and friends and watching tv.

What is your favorite quote and why?

Don’t judge someone until you have walked in their shoes.
