How did you get started in the long-term care profession?

A friend encouraged me to take CNA classes.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?

It’s hard to put into words, but working in a nursing home is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. As a CNA and a bath aide, no two days are ever the same. Every resident has a different story, personality and set of needs which makes each day unique.

One of the things I love most is that the residents are genuinely happy to see me. I get the opportunity to be there for them when they are scared, uncertain or just need someone to listen. In return, they teach me lessons I didn’t even know I needed to learn — especially patience, compassion and appreciation for life.

I also feel that this is my chance to give back. Many of these residents spent their lives taking care of others, raising families and building communities. Now it’s our turn to care for them with the same kindness and respect they once gave to those around them.

The work can be challenging, but the relationships, the trust and the small moments of making someone’s day better are what make it so meaningful to me.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?

Long-term care isn’t just a job — it’s about building relationships and making a difference in someone’s everyday life. You’ll have difficult days, but you’ll also have days filled with laughter, meaningful conversations and moments that remind you why you chose this work.

The residents become like family. You learn their stories, celebrate their successes, comfort them through challenges and earn their trust. In return, they teach you patience, resilience, gratitude and compassion.

You have to come into this field with a caring heart and a willingness to serve others. The work can be physically and emotionally demanding, but it is also incredibly rewarding. Knowing that you helped someone feel safe, respected and cared for at the end of the day is a feeling that’s hard to match.

If you want a career where what you do truly matters, long-term care may be exactly where you’re meant to be.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?

Patience and understanding.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?

Spending time with family, cross-stitch and fishing.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“Do small things with great love.” – Mother Teresa
