Member Spotlight: KyLee Walker of Prairie Vista Village

March 2, 2023

KyLee Walker, the assisted living director at Prairie Vista Village, enjoys connecting with residents and staff and has found a love for her career in long-term care. KyLee is also a member of IHCA’s 2022-2023 Executive Health Care Leadership Institute.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?

I took the certified nursing assistant (CNA) class as part of a requirement for the nursing program I was entering. At the time, I did not think I would ever use the certificate. Low and behold, while I was on the waiting list and taking other classes, I spent five years as a CNA.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?

I like the people. The residents make you feel whole, important and fulfilled in life. The staff push you to be better and I have built some lifelong friendships and families from this career.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?

If you want to make a difference in life, this is where you do it!

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also helps outside of work?

Wow, what have I not learned? Not only have I learned proper care techniques, from wound care, peri care and IVs, but so much more. I have learned empathy. I know how to listen and give support, and that all things are not cured by a bandage or a medication. I have learned how to advocate for my patients and myself.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy camping and spending time outside (when the weather is warm). I spend time with my family and watch/transport my daughter to all her activities.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“Better safe than sorry.” This seems to be what I tell all my patients when I want them to do something when they really don’t want to.
