Member Spotlight: Mallory Orton of Montrose Health Center

February 23, 2023

Mallory Orton began volunteering in a nursing facility while a student in middle school and found a love for long-term care. She continues to follow her passion of helping others by serving as the administrator at Montrose Health Center.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I began volunteering at a nursing facility during middle school, which is where my great-grandfather lived. I helped with activities. It soon became a full-time volunteer position for me during summer months.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?
My favorite part about working in long-term care is forming special relationships with each resident and family member.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Long-term care is the type of job where you will always go home at the end of the day and know you made a difference in someone’s life. Even if you felt like it was the worst day, you can still make that impact.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help outside of work?
Compassion will take you a long way in life. It will help with your profession, personal relationships and when meeting strangers.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy spending time with my family. Our first son was born in October, so I enjoy experiencing all of the new, exciting things he is learning.

What is your favorite quote and why?
My favorite quote is “Just one positive thought in the morning can change your whole day.”
