Phelan Birchmier, a resident aide at Green Hills Retirement Community, finds joy in making a positive difference in her residents’ lives. Phelan is also a 2023 recipient of the IHCA Member Employee Scholarship.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
I decided to become a nurse aide in high school because I knew I wanted to have a career in the medical field. After completing my clinicals, I preferred long-term care because I was able to make lasting relationships with those I helped.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
My favorite part about working in long-term care is learning from my residents. They are able to share a lifetime of experiences with me. Every time I go to work I learn something new.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
A job in long-term care is rewarding because you are making a difference in the residents’ lives. I know I make a difference because my residents and their family members share their gratitude and appreciation for what I do for them. I don’t do this job for the recognition, but it reminds me that I am providing the best care for my residents.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I am grateful to be able to work alongside nurses who are willing to teach me skills within my practice and insights on their job. This allows me to better understand the geriatric population and to look for concerns when performing cares.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
When I’m not working, I enjoy reading and spending time with my family.
What is your favorite quote and why?
“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel,” Mary Angelou. This is my favorite quote because it reminds me that even though my actions may be forgotten, they still left a lasting impression.
