Rachel Henriksen, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) at Accura Healthcare of Bancroft, enjoys making connections with her residents, resident family members and coworkers. Rachel is a 2023 IHCA Foundation John W. and Kimberly D. Grubb Registered Nurse (RN) Scholarship recipient and looks forward to working toward her dream of becoming a nurse.
How did you get started in the long-term care profession?
During May of 2020, I began working as a temporary nurse aide (TNA) due to my CNA class being cancelled due to COVID-19. I earned my CNA as soon as I was able to, and have worked as a CNA ever since.
What do you like most about working in long-term care?
I enjoy making connections with the residents, family members and my coworkers.
What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?
Although it is mentally and physically exhausting at times, the reward is far more than worth it. These residents become family.
What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?
I have learned patience, compassion, empathy and dedication.
When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?
I am currently attending college for nursing, I dance on my school’s dance team, and I value time with my family and friends.
What is your favorite quote?
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; Do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
