Member Spotlight: Adelle Wolfswinkel of Prairie View

August 24, 2023

Adelle has held multiple positions in long-term care (LTC) and describes LTC as a fulfilling career. She has dreamed of becoming a nurse since kindergarten and is taking classes to work toward turning her dream into a reality. She is currently a certified nursing assistant at Prairie View Campus in Sanborn and is a recent 2023 IHCA Member Employee Scholarship recipient.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?

I started in dietary and decided that I loved the residents and wanted to continue to work with them.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?

I love the connections that I am able to make with my residents.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?

It is such a fulfilling career and you are able to help others and create connections. It is one of the most difficult things you can do as well, because you know you are with those people through their most difficult and challenging times.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?

I have really learned how to be gentle and compassionate with others, and I have been able to improve my communication and people skills.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy spending time with friends and boating.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.” We have to do something that we love with our lives, and it makes it so much easier when you help the people that you grow to love.
