Member Spotlight: Kayla Kouri of Spurgeon Manor

November 2, 2023

Kayla Kouri, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) and certified medication aide (CMA) at Spurgeon Manor fell in love with her career on day one and enjoys forming unique connections with each of her residents. Additionally, Kayla is a 2023 IHCA Member Employee Scholarship recipient.

How did you get started in the long-term care profession?

I got my CNA fresh out of high school and started working at Spurgeon Manor. I fell in love with it on my first day.

What do you like most about working in long-term care?

My residents! I love coming to work and it never feels like a job to me. These residents deserve the world. To know I get to love and care for them is my favorite part.

What would you tell others to encourage them to consider a career in long-term care?

Long-term care gives you the chance to form real relationships with your residents and staff. The bond is special and unique with each resident and staff member.

What lessons have you learned working in long-term care that also help you outside of work?

I have learned patience. Working in long-term care takes patience. I have also learned communication skills. Communication is a key part in nursing.

When you’re not at work, what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy caring for my mini farm (cows and potbelly pigs), reading Colleen Hoover books and taking my dogs for walks on our gravel roads.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“I didn’t come this far to only come this far.” I love this quote because it speaks a lot of truth. I remind myself often that we all have battles we face and don’t talk about, but we have to keep moving and grooving.
